Absolutely. I’ve been hollering that the GOP is a mob of racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-democratic, fascist theocrats for decades. I’d say it’s been obvious since Nixon.

I saw the guy who came up with the Southern Strategy (Kevin Phillips) give a speech where he confessed to and apologized for it. And does anybody think Reagan’s Neshoba County Fair “states’ rights” speech was anything more than a big warm hug to the racist South?

In the meantime, anybody who supported Trump is going to have to do some fancy talking to convince me they aren’t either a racist or OK with racism. He was getting praised up one side and down the other by the alt-right, the neo-Nazis and all the rest of the rightwing slime brigade for God’s sake. It wasn’t subtle.

The problem is that some of us White folks have gotten really good at either embracing racism or finding it invisible. My goal with this piece was to give a gentle nudge toward seeing reality in the first half, followed by a warning that the shit’s hitting the fan and we’ve got to be ready.

Whether a conservative is avowedly racist or not, to admit the existence of systemic bias is a death sentence for their entire philosophy…and they have proven to be really, really good at closing their eyes, ears and minds when they don’t like what’s in front of them.

As far as I can tell, there is no bottom to what they’re willing to do. I’ll never say, “oh, they wouldn’t do that, that’s too far.” To keep power, yes, they would.
