All autocrats eventually go that route - lots of power, isolation, pressure, ego-stroking sycophants... Then add age, and something eventually snaps. Chavez and Hitler come to mind as guys who had some chops as effective autocrats who eventually circled the drain and made dumb decisions. If Hitler had stepped aside and let someone competent lead the army in WWII, the official language of the UK would be German.
