Are you mixing up two definitions of "norms"?
Things like sex and drugs are cultural norms. As a democracy, we set those at the ballot box. Gay marriage, abortion, marijuana, etc. are legal because most people want them to be.
Political norms are the ones presidents, legislators, and judges are expected to follow. Things like accepting election results, and don't try to overturn them. Don't interfere with the DOJ. Don't threaten political opponents with the power of the state. Allow the civil service to operate without political interference. That sort of thing.
Going back to the cultural norms of the 1950s are not popular, because (for example) Black, women, and LGBT people weren't treated as full citizens, or sometimes even as fully human.
But: (1) wanting to go back there is anybody's right, just don't expect a lot of support, and (2) don't violate political norms to accomplish what you can't democratically.
Hopefully that helps.
