As a mathematician involved in the arts community, what I see is that creatives in general tend to be "progressive" politically and societally. It makes sense. For one, being creative usually doesn't pay very well...

But more importantly, remember Buckley's definition of a conservative as someone who "stands athwart history yelling STOP!" That attitude is not conducive to, well, pushing forward. People who create - tech, music, visual arts, whatever - are, intentionally or not, breaking history.

Also, as a musician I have gay friends, and the right's attitude toward them is viciously psychopathic. That alone is enough to stand foursquare against conservatism. The other reasons are legion, but one will do for now.
