Clearly, religions — at least Christianity and Islam — have proven themselves unfit for the task. We've all seen the problems in the Muslim world. Here in the good ol' US of A, Evangelicals are ascendant and are now the driving force for the definition of "Jesus."

How are they doing? Well, while legislatures in red states are passing laws requiring the Ten Commandments be posted in classrooms, they voted in near lockstep behind a man with no use for any of them. Boiling down the details, there is only one coherent message of MAGA: "I promise to be cruel to people you don't like." And the followers of the Prince of Peace lapped it up and bayed for blood.

Some people disagree with my summation of Tr*mpism, but nobody has actually managed to come up with anything else. My response to almost everybody now is some version of "OK, what did I get wrong?" Very few even try, none persuasively. I'm a mathematician, logic is my stock in trade. Give me a reasonable argument, and I'll try it on for size.

What I see now is mainly that "Christianity" means shut off your brain, put on your Team Jesus jersey, and hit the battlefield.

I turned out to be right that separation of church and state is just as crucial for the church as it is for the state.
