Finally, a level of coherence on this subject!
The problem is that the last 40 years have seen the merging of conservative Christianity and conservative politics, so now the important sins are the ones that motivate the base and bring in the fundraising dollars. Gay sex is a sin, but eating a shrimp cocktail while wearing a poly-blend sweater is two. But abortion and homosexuality are easy moneymakers, so those are basically the only ones we hear about.
Shrimp are tasty, blended fabrics are comfortable, football is fun so we'll just not worry about them. Millionaire pastors gloss over the eye of a needle stuff because being a millionaire is cool. People with scripture in their mouths and hate in their hearts don't want to change, so Man makes god in his own image.
As they say, never trust anyone whose deity agrees with them on everything.
What the GOP needs is more gay members...though since hating them is the #2 feature of the party, it may be hard to find people willing to join. But familiarity can breed tolerance if you let it. As a musician I've had them in my life as long as I can remember, and the idea of treating them as second-class citizens is a dealbreaker.
