I finally figured out the beauty of math the second time I took calculus (don't ask). All of a sudden it was this "whoa" moment. Ended up with two degrees in it, but dropped out of a Ph.D. program to study music instead (my college career was complicated).
Unfortunately, as long as being "bad at math" is seen as a badge of honor I'm not sure we'll convince kids to see it differently.
Worse yet, we have to convince the teachers. There's a study out there of the MARS (math anxiety) test showing elementary teachers score very high, meaning they have to teach a subject they're afraid of. Don't know if that result held up/is still true.
