I subscribe to the theory that people listen best to people like themselves.

One of my favorite examples is the effect Macklemore — love him or hate him — had on gay marriage with the song “Same Love.” What’s the benefit of a straight white guy supporting LGBT rights in a Black musical form? Because a white rapper famous for a goofy novelty song can speak to the most misogynist parts of our society in a way other can’t.

I doubt I can help, but goddamn it I’m going to say my piece. I feel obliged to try.
