I’m really just pointing out that Republicans and conservatives have a massive investment in their view of law and order. Politically speaking, they’ve placed tremendous emphasis on “leftist violence.” If it turns out there wasn’t as much as they’ve said, that’s a real political loss for them. Beyond political, really. With the collapse of the intellectual right, they’re left clutching onto pieces unsupported realities. So there’s a cognitive dissonance at play. They may not want to live in failed cities because that’s no fun. But if “liberal” cities aren’t failing, an enormous chunk of their political message and political identities turn out to be lies. Nobody wants that. People are people, the death of your worldview almost feels like actual death. Conservatism is basically a religion at this point – believing it is integral to your being, but there’s no actual data to support it.
