In general? I'd say it means they're shit. My impression is that a whole lot of folks just like kicking other people around ("the cruelty is the point").

Even for the better ones, growing up in a world saturated with "women are lesser" has an effect on them. My mom was a college professor with a doctorate and took no shit from anybody. That may have had an effect.
