It's a problem for anyone who is deep into an activity. For instance, I don't buy my wife calligraphy supplies. I have no idea what she needs, I just know those needs are specific. Guessing isn't going to cut it.

I've taken to finding out something she wants but thinks it's too expensive. The gift is putting your stamp of approval on the purchase - "don't worry about the money, you should have this."
