It's impolite to say bluntly, "You're a compromise candidate."

But here, she was trying to be nice and just got it wrong. This is a case where intention should matter.

As other people have said, walking away from her for that suggests he isn't ready for or invested enough in the relationship and is using it as an excuse to bail.

But from my middle-aged perspective, they're right. If this is too much to handle, he's not good husband material. Because this may seem important to a younger person, but on the scale of shit that threatens a relationship, it's penny ante stuff.

Keeping a relationship alive is work. Hard work. You have to want it and be prepared to let a lot go.
