It's on my list of "pet peeves," though that's ironic understatement. As long as there are secular advantages to marriage, any citizen should be eligible, it's intellectually dishonest to claim otherwise. It's back to the right-wing thing of "giving people we don't like privileges we don't think they should have is oppression of us."
Religious people talk about the "sanctity of marriage," but why should government be in the business of sanctifying anything?
