I've always been the tiniest bit conflicted on Trump. He clearly had the best, least regressive policy positions in 2016, even if he was clearly unsuited for the job at every level in every possible measurable way.
I think he has provided a very real service, though. He's revealed what some of us have been shouting about decades: the Republican party is rotten to its core. People love to blame him, but no politician succeeds without constituents who are worse than he is in many ways.
He's also revealed so many fragilities in our system of government. I think the only way we survive beyond him is a some sort of Truth and Reconciliation Committee. It should identify all the harm that he did and the ways he proved norms are ineffective, and pass laws to protect against future wannabe despots.
Do I imagine such a thing will ever ever happen? Of course not. Because the political and religious right who are the source of the rot will still be with us after he's gone.
