I've never studying tilings, but (vaguely) remember a presentation in grad school by a fellow student.

(Mine was proving the fundamental theorem of algebra using topology, because WTF not? That was 30 years ago, don't remember a damn thing anymore, not even a paper I effing WROTE and found in a box last year...)
