Kind of a weakness in the system. Politicians — particularly Republicans — have zero motivation to compromise because their base will punish them for it. Every GOP elected knows their biggest (or even only) challenge in their gerrymandered district will be an attack from the right in the primary.
The Democrats are a big diverse mess, but the GOP has been seized by a minority. I don't remember the exact numbers, but only about 10% of Americans want abortion banned completely and 25% banned at six weeks. Compare that to the ≈30% who think it should be unrestricted.
Extremists rule.
