My feeling is we’re all flawed, yes, but the minimum standard should be moving forward and not accept going backward. As long as that’s happening, rage is probably not the answer.
The country has made progress over my lifetime. Sometimes people act like the worst parts of our history are way in the past, but when I was born, there was no federal guarantee of civil rights, there were states where women couldn’t own property or get a credit card in their own name, and you could basically hunt gay men for sport. It was a primitive time, and not that long ago.
If women, minorities, LGBT people, etc. are pissed off, I get it. And progress only happens if enough people are mad enough to force the issue. Sill, As horrible as it sounds, patience is required, which sounds bad coming from me since I’m in such a privileged position. But societies don’t — can’t — change overnight.
That being said, when we start going backward, and the gains we’ve made are threatened, I can’t argue against fury as a response.
Sometimes it IS us against them, and sometimes hate is an understandable response.
