That's a common response. But the point of my article is that it's not one way and you don't have to loathe yourself, just try to be better.

It's true that racism is as human as breathing, but in this country where I live it's one direction, whites v. nonwhites. Note: this comment often gets pushback in the form of "well, some Black people hate White people too." Which is true, but that's bias, not racism. Since the American power structure is controlled almost entirely by folks of pale shades, our society can't ever really be racist toward Whites.

It is true that race relations have improved, and one of the clearest symptoms of that is that they seem to have gotten worse. They haven't, we've just improved to the point where we can actually address the topic: POC have been emboldened to come out and say things, and some White folk are listening.

That's a big change. But it's very unsettling to a lot of people, hence the current devolution of conservatism into the intergalactic fucking freakshow it's become.

Republicans often complain they're made to feel bad, but self-loathing isn't a bad thing when it's deserved...
