This is part of an argument I hear quite a bit, though never openly: things aren't going well, something has to change, so it's time for women to take one for the team.

At least in the post-WW II era they admitted Rosie the Riveter had to go back to the kitchen so returning soldiers could have jobs. This is the same mindset.
