Separation of church and state is important for the state AND the church. Each ruins the other.

The 21st century has proven that conservative thought generally, and conservative Christianity in particular, can only function in opposition. They can’t actually lead anything, in part because of what you’re describing — a coalition of extremists can only survive as long as they have a common enemy.
