You have fallen into the somehow trying to equate science with religion fallacy. Some people fall into that category, but not the scientists themselves. I get that some people really, really wanted to be true, but it's wishful thinking.

And please retire the whole "people worship science so they aren't atheists" nonsense. It sounds great to people who want it to be true, but it's both logically null and detached from reality. People who see the world in those terms can't understand people who don't.
